Cloud & DevOps Services We Offer in Halifax
Halifax cloud demand splits four ways. Defence and shipbuilding suppliers around Irving Shipyard and CFB Halifax — IMP Aerospace, Lockheed Martin Canada Atlantic, Babcock Canada, Thales Canada Atlantic — need ITAR-aware, Controlled Goods Program-registered cloud architectures with Protected B suitability and CCCS Top 10 baselines. Ocean and maritime research — Dalhousie, COVE tenants, Canadian Ocean Cluster portfolio companies — push petabyte-scale ocean sensor data, AUV telemetry, and oceanographic ML workloads through scientific computing pipelines on AWS ParallelCluster, Azure Batch, or Slurm-on-cloud. Financial services and insurance back-office — Manulife John Hancock Halifax, Manulife Asset Management, regional credit unions, Atlantic Bluecross — operate under OSFI Guideline B-13 (technology and cyber risk) for federally regulated arms plus Nova Scotia FOIPOP for public-sector data. SaaS and startups — REDspace (digital experiences for global media), Site 1001 (CMMS), Volta Labs portfolio, NSCC spinouts — need SOC 2 Type II-ready landing zones, GitOps deployment, and observability calibrated for enterprise procurement. We deliver landing zones on AWS Control Tower or Azure Landing Zones, Kubernetes platforms (EKS, AKS, GKE plus Karpenter or Cluster Autoscaler), Terraform and Pulumi IaC, GitHub Actions or GitLab CI plus Argo CD GitOps, observability on Datadog, Grafana Cloud, or Honeycomb, and FinOps tooling that survives ACOA grant reporting and OSFI internal audit.
Our Cloud & DevOps Development Process
Engagements run on Atlantic and Eastern hours with full overlap from our Edmonton and Chandigarh hubs (Atlantic is one hour ahead of Eastern). Discovery weeks one to three inventory current state, map regulatory exposure across PIPEDA, Nova Scotia FOIPOP, OSFI B-13, ITAR for defence scope, and CCCS ITSG-33 Annex 3 Protected B baselines where Crown contracts apply. Weeks four to ten ship a target landing-zone architecture, IaC repository skeleton, identity-and-access design on AWS IAM Identity Center, Azure AD, or Okta, observability and FinOps tooling, and CI/CD platform selection. Build phase pairs your team with ours on full-stack Terraform or Pulumi authorship, Kubernetes platform engineering, secrets management (HashiCorp Vault, AWS Secrets Manager, Azure Key Vault with customer-managed keys in Canadian KMS), and deployment pipelines that meet SOC 2 change-management evidence requirements without overhead. Runbooks, incident response procedures, and DR playbooks ship with the platform. ACOA-funded clients get reporting templates aligned with grant outcome milestones.
Infrastructure Assessment
1-2 WeeksWe audit your current infrastructure, identify bottlenecks, evaluate cloud readiness, and design a target architecture with cost projections.
Architecture Design
1-2 WeeksDesign the cloud architecture following AWS Well-Architected Framework principles with networking, security, and high-availability configurations.
Implementation & Migration
4-8 WeeksProvision infrastructure with IaC, set up CI/CD pipelines, containerize applications, and execute the migration with rollback strategies.
Testing & Validation
1-2 WeeksLoad testing, failover testing, security scanning, and performance benchmarking to validate the new infrastructure meets all requirements.
Monitoring & Handoff
1 WeekSet up comprehensive monitoring with alerting, create runbooks for common operations, and train your team on managing the new infrastructure.
Technologies We Use for Cloud & DevOps
Halifax cloud stacks default to AWS ca-central-1 (Montreal) or Azure Canada Central (Toronto) as primary, with AWS ca-west-1 (Calgary, launched November 2024) increasingly used for DR diversification across geographic regions — a meaningful improvement over the previous two-region Canadian footprint. Azure Canada East (Quebec City) is the Azure DR pair. GCP northamerica-northeast1 (Montreal) and northamerica-northeast2 (Toronto) cover GCP-anchored workloads. Customer-managed keys sit in Canadian KMS regions for Protected B and OSFI-touching data. Infrastructure-as-code is Terraform (with Terragrunt for multi-environment) or Pulumi (TypeScript or Python where engineering teams prefer real programming languages). Kubernetes platforms run EKS, AKS, or GKE with Karpenter autoscaling, Istio or Linkerd service mesh where needed, Argo CD for GitOps, and Tekton or GitHub Actions for build pipelines. Observability stacks combine Datadog or Grafana Cloud for metrics and logs, Honeycomb or Tempo for distributed tracing, and Sentry for client-side error tracking. FinOps uses native AWS Cost Explorer plus Cur or CloudHealth, Azure Cost Management plus Apptio Cloudability, with monthly cost reviews tied to ACOA milestone reporting where applicable.
