Outsourcing & Engagement Models

Offshore Development

Offshore development is the practice of contracting software work to a team in a distant country, usually several time zones away, to reach lower labour costs or a larger talent pool. Common offshore regions for North American companies include India, Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia.

Cost is the most cited reason. As of September 2026, agency-delivered market ranges for senior developers run about $35–55 an hour in India and $30–50 in Southeast Asia, against $150–250 in the US and Canada. Those are market ranges rather than quotes, and the total cost of an engagement also depends on management overhead, rework and communication.

The main challenge is distance. Large time-zone gaps limit real-time collaboration, so offshore work goes best with written specifications, a short daily overlap window, automated tests and code review on every change. Teams that rely on quick hallway conversations to resolve ambiguity tend to struggle with offshore delivery until those habits are replaced by documented ones.

Cost advantage

Hourly ranges well below US and Canadian rates for comparable seniority.

Time-zone gap

Working hours may barely overlap with the client's, so overlap must be planned.

Process-dependent

Works best with clear specs, async communication and strong code review.

Common questions about offshore development.

Ask Us Anything
  • Offshore development uses teams in distant countries with large time-zone differences, such as India for a North American client. Nearshore development uses teams in nearby countries with little or no time difference, such as Latin America for the US and Canada. Offshore usually costs less; nearshore makes real-time collaboration easier.
