Service Overview

Cybersecurity Solutions for Los Angeles Businesses

Los Angeles cybersecurity is structurally different from San Francisco, New York, London, or Tel Aviv. The three threat models that actually drive LA budgets are pre-release entertainment content protection for Hollywood studios, ITAR and CMMC 2.0 aerospace and defense controls for the South Bay cluster (SpaceX in Hawthorne, Anduril in Costa Mesa, Skydio, Boeing El Segundo, Northrop Grumman Redondo Beach, Raytheon El Segundo, JPL in Pasadena under NASA federal cyber), and HIPAA Security Rule plus California Confidentiality of Medical Information Act enforcement for Cedars-Sinai, UCLA Health, City of Hope, Keck Medicine of USC, Kaiser Permanente Southern California, and Children\'s Hospital Los Angeles. The Sony Pictures 2014 breach (attributed to North Korean Lazarus actors, with leaked email archives, unreleased films, and pre-production materials dumped publicly) reset the baseline for studio insider-threat and pre-release protection programs, and every Hollywood vendor relationship since then has been calibrated against the MPAA Content Security Best Practices and the Trusted Partner Network (TPN) audit framework administered jointly by the Motion Picture Association and the Content Delivery and Security Association. Codazz builds and operates cybersecurity programs for LA studios, post-production and VFX vendors, streaming services with LA footprints, aerospace and defense primes and their subcontract chain, and the regional health systems that anchor the Westside, Mid-Wilshire, and Pasadena medical corridors. We work Pacific Time from our Edmonton and Chandigarh hubs, price in USD against fixed statements of work, and align every program to the regulatory and compliance stack LA security leaders face daily: CCPA and CPRA, HIPAA, the California Confidentiality of Medical Information Act (CMIA), ITAR (22 CFR 120-130), EAR (15 CFR 730-774), DFARS 252.204-7012 and the CMMC 2.0 framework, NIST SP 800-171, the MPA Content Security Best Practices Common Guidelines, TPN Gold and Silver Shield audits, AB 730 (the 2019 California deepfake election law) and AB 602 (deepfake nude image civil remedy), SB 1001 California bot disclosure, SEC Item 1.05 of Form 8-K for public-company issuers, and the FBI Los Angeles Field Office Cyber Task Force coordination protocols. Instead of a SOC slide deck, you get a TPN-audit-ready architecture, a CMMC 2.0-aligned enclave for ITAR-controlled work, and a HIPAA Security Rule control set defensible to the OCR and the California AG.

What We Build

Cybersecurity Services We Offer in Los Angeles

Our LA cybersecurity services are organised against the three threat models that define this city. For Hollywood studio and vendor work we build TPN-audit-ready architectures that pass either a Gold Shield (production and post-production at the highest-risk tier) or Silver Shield (lower-risk content workflows) audit against the MPA Content Security Best Practices Common Guidelines, including the Application and Cloud Security addendum. That means encrypted dailies pipelines (Aspera with at-rest AES-256 plus in-transit TLS 1.3, Signiant Media Shuttle, MASV, Filemail Enterprise where the studio has approved them), watermarked screener distribution through Verance Aspect, Convergent Risks Witness, or Cinea, DRM stacks layered across Widevine, PlayReady, and FairPlay, secure transfer protocols documented in the Asset Protection Plan, insider-threat monitoring keyed to the Sony 2014 lessons learned, and pre-release embargo workflows with hardware-rooted MFA for any account with access to unreleased materials. For aerospace and defense we build CMMC 2.0 enclaves (Level 1 for FCI, Level 2 for CUI handling NIST SP 800-171\'s 110 controls, Level 3 for the highest-sensitivity programs) aligned to DFARS 252.204-7012 with the SPRS scoring, ITAR technical-data segregation, and the deemed-export controls that pre-empt foreign national access. For healthcare we build HIPAA Security Rule programs that survive an OCR audit and a California AG investigation, with CMIA confidentiality-of-medical-information layered on top, breach-notification playbooks that map the HIPAA 60-day clock and the California breach statute, and the medical-device and IoMT security work that Cedars and UCLA Health have made a procurement requirement. Across all three: SOC and SIEM build-outs on Splunk Enterprise Security, Microsoft Sentinel, or Elastic Security; EDR on CrowdStrike Falcon (CrowdStrike has a significant LA office presence) or SentinelOne; CNAPP on Wiz or Prisma Cloud; identity on Okta or Microsoft Entra ID with FIDO2 phishing-resistant MFA; vulnerability management on Tenable (Tenable Westwood office covers LA) or Qualys; application security on Snyk and Semgrep.

Industry Expertise

Cybersecurity for Los Angeles's Key Industries

LA cybersecurity demand concentrates in four buckets, and we have shipped in each. In entertainment, the major studios (Disney in Burbank, Warner Bros Discovery in Burbank, Universal in Universal City, Paramount in Hollywood, Sony Pictures in Culver City, Netflix with significant LA operations though headquartered in Los Gatos, Amazon MGM in Culver City, Apple TV+ in Culver City), the post-production and VFX vendor ecosystem (Technicolor, Deluxe, MPC, Framestore LA, Industrial Light and Magic, DNEG LA, Pixomondo LA, Method Studios), and the music labels (Universal Music Group in Santa Monica, Warner Music in LA, Sony Music) all operate under MPA Content Security Best Practices and require TPN-audited vendors. The 2014 Sony Pictures breach reset insider-threat and pre-release protection baselines, and every studio CISO function since has been calibrated against that lessons-learned document. In aerospace and defense, SpaceX (Hawthorne), Anduril Industries (Costa Mesa), Skydio, Boeing (El Segundo and Long Beach), Northrop Grumman (Redondo Beach and El Segundo), Raytheon (El Segundo), Lockheed Martin Skunk Works (Palmdale), Aerojet Rocketdyne, JPL (Pasadena, NASA federal cyber under FISMA), and the broader SoCal subcontract chain operate under ITAR, EAR, DFARS 252.204-7012, CMMC 2.0, and NIST SP 800-171, with selected programs requiring DOE 10 CFR 1004 or DoD Top Secret SCI compartmented access. In healthcare, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, UCLA Health (Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica UCLA), Keck Medicine of USC, City of Hope (Duarte), Kaiser Permanente Southern California, Children\'s Hospital Los Angeles, Providence Saint John\'s, and the surrounding clinic and IPA networks operate under HIPAA Security Rule and CMIA with the California AG actively enforcing. In consumer and DTC, the LA-based brands (Honey, Riot Games in Santa Monica, Activision Blizzard in Santa Monica, Snap Inc. in Santa Monica, TikTok\'s LA office in Culver City, Hulu in Santa Monica, Edmunds, Tinder and Match LA) operate under CCPA, CPRA, COPPA where applicable, SOC 2 Type II as a customer trust requirement, and ISO 27001:2022 as an enterprise procurement gate.

Our Process

Our Cybersecurity Development Process

Engagements run on Pacific Time so LA studio CISOs, aerospace ISSMs, health-system Chief Information Security Officers, and audit committees get synchronous reviews rather than overnight handoffs from Eastern or European hubs. Discovery opens with the threat model specific to the client: a TPN gap assessment for studio and post-production work mapped against the current MPA Content Security Best Practices version, a CMMC 2.0 gap assessment for aerospace and defense scoped against the SPRS scoring methodology and the C3PAO certification calendar, a HIPAA Security Rule and CMIA assessment for health systems with the OCR Audit Protocol as the evidence checklist, and a CCPA and CPRA inventory for any consumer-facing brand that touches California resident data. Remediation is sequenced by exploitability and audit exposure, not by checklist alphabetisation. Every sprint closes with a measurable control improvement that maps to a specific audit line item: TPN MPA-T-2.x.x control closure for studio work, CMMC 2.0 practice closure with SPRS score uplift for defense, HIPAA Security Rule administrative or technical safeguard closure for health. Tabletop exercises are run against scenarios that have actually hit LA: a Sony-pattern insider exfiltration of pre-release content, a DPRK Lazarus-style supply-chain compromise of a studio vendor, a ransomware lock of a post-production facility three days before a delivery deadline, an ITAR deemed-export violation where a foreign-national contractor touched controlled technical data, a CMIA breach at a multi-site health system. SEC Item 1.05 of Form 8-K 4-day cyber disclosure drafts are pre-staged for public-company clients (Disney, Warner Bros Discovery, Paramount, Netflix vendor exposure, Cedars-Sinai is non-profit but its public-debt covenants matter) so the clock does not start with a blank page.

Technology

Technologies We Use for Cybersecurity

LA security stacks are chosen for TPN auditor defensibility, CMMC 2.0 C3PAO assessment readiness, HIPAA OCR audit survivability, and the analyst hiring depth in the South Bay, Westside, Burbank, and Pasadena labour markets. We default to CrowdStrike Falcon or SentinelOne Singularity for EDR and XDR (both have a heavy LA studio and aerospace install base, with Sophos and Trustwave LA also represented in the studio tier), Splunk Enterprise Security, Microsoft Sentinel, or Elastic Security for SIEM, Wiz or Prisma Cloud for CNAPP across AWS, Azure, and GCP, Tenable or Qualys for vulnerability management, Snyk and Semgrep for SAST and SCA, and Okta or Microsoft Entra ID for identity with FIDO2 phishing-resistant MFA. Cloud workloads for entertainment sit in AWS us-west-2 (Oregon) with us-west-1 (Northern California) DR or in Azure West US 2 and West US 3, the regions that LA studio IT and Disney, Warner Bros, Paramount, Universal, and Netflix vendor architectures default to. ITAR and CMMC 2.0 workloads sit in AWS GovCloud (US-West), Azure Government, or on-premises enclaves where the contract requires air-gap. Content protection adds Verance Aspect, ContentArmor, Convergent Risks Witness, and Cinea for watermarking, plus Widevine, PlayReady, and FairPlay for DRM. Threat intelligence is layered with CrowdStrike Falcon Intelligence, Mandiant Advantage, and Recorded Future. Zero Trust segmentation is architected against CISA Zero Trust Maturity Model v2 and NIST SP 800-207 with Illumio or Akamai Guardicore for microsegmentation, Cloudflare Access, Zscaler ZPA, or Netskope Private Access for ZTNA replacing legacy VPN.

🎬

TPN Gold Shield Architects

Programs are built to pass a first-attempt TPN Gold Shield audit against the MPA Content Security Best Practices Common Guidelines plus Application and Cloud Security addendums, with the Asset Protection Plan, watermarked screener distribution through Verance and ContentArmor, encrypted dailies on Aspera and Signiant, and pre-release embargo workflows tuned to the Sony 2014 lessons learned. Disney, Warner, Paramount, Universal, and Sony Pictures vendor procurement gates handled as standard.

🛰️

CMMC 2.0 Enclave Specialists

We build CMMC 2.0 Level 2 and Level 3 enclaves for the SpaceX, Anduril, Skydio, Boeing El Segundo, Northrop Redondo Beach, Raytheon El Segundo, and JPL subcontract chain, with the AWS GovCloud or Azure Government architecture, the System Security Plan and POA&M documentation, the 110 NIST SP 800-171 controls with SPRS scoring rationale, and the ITAR deemed-export controls layered on top. C3PAO assessment readiness and DCMA DIBCAC defensibility as the baseline.

🏥

HIPAA + CMIA for Cedars and UCLA Health

HIPAA Security Rule programs are mapped against the OCR Audit Protocol and the California CMIA layered remedies, with the breach-notification playbook tracking the HIPAA 60-day clock, the California Civil Code 1798.82 15-business-day clock, and the HHS Secretary notification in parallel. IoMT and medical-device segmentation through Claroty or Medigate, BAA flow-down templated to the HITECH subcontractor requirements, and OCR enforcement preparedness as the design standard.

🎭

Sony 2014 Insider-Threat Doctrine

Pre-release content protection is built against the Sony Pictures 2014 lessons-learned baseline with hardware FIDO2 MFA, PAM-gated least privilege, watermarking on every screener, DLP on every egress path, UEBA tuned to insider-threat indicators, and FBI Los Angeles Field Office Cyber Task Force coordination protocols pre-staged. The studio CISO posture that Hollywood has rebuilt to since 2014, ported into the vendor and post-production tier where 80 percent of pre-release exposure actually lives.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions About Cybersecurity in Los Angeles

Have a question not listed here? Reach out to our team and we will get back to you within 4 hours.

Ask a Question
What is the Trusted Partner Network (TPN) and how do you achieve TPN Gold or Silver Shield status for a Hollywood vendor?

The Trusted Partner Network (TPN) is a joint Motion Picture Association and Content Delivery and Security Association program that administers content-security audits for studio vendors. The framework is built on the MPA Content Security Best Practices, with a Common Guidelines document plus Application and Cloud Security addendums. Gold Shield is the highest assessment tier, requiring a third-party C3PAO-style on-site or hybrid audit by a TPN-approved assessor (Convergent Risks, ContentArmor, Richey May, BSI, and a small set of others) against the full Common Guidelines plus relevant addendums. Silver Shield is a self-assessment tier verified by TPN. To achieve Gold Shield we build the Asset Protection Plan (the primary TPN evidence artifact), implement the MPA-T-1.x.x physical security controls, MPA-T-2.x.x digital security controls (network segmentation, access controls, encryption at rest and in transit, MFA, logging, vulnerability management, secure transfer protocols), MPA-T-3.x.x personnel controls (background checks, NDAs, training), and the Application Security and Cloud Security addendum controls where the vendor handles content in cloud workflows. Audit cycle is typically annual. Studios increasingly require Gold Shield for any vendor touching pre-release or unreleased material, and Disney, Warner Bros, Paramount, Universal, and Sony Pictures all enforce TPN status as a procurement gate. We have built programs that passed Gold Shield on first audit and we will tell you up front which controls need 12 to 16 weeks of remediation before booking an assessor.

How do you build a CMMC 2.0 enclave for a SpaceX, Anduril, or Skydio subcontractor?

CMMC 2.0 (Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification, finalised in October 2024 with the 32 CFR Part 170 rule and the December 2024 effective date) applies to any DoD contractor or subcontractor handling Federal Contract Information (FCI) or Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI). Level 1 (17 practices for FCI) is a self-assessment. Level 2 (110 practices aligned to NIST SP 800-171 Rev 2) requires a third-party C3PAO assessment for most programs handling CUI, with affirmation submitted to the Supplier Performance Risk System (SPRS). Level 3 (Level 2 plus a subset of NIST SP 800-172 enhanced controls) requires a DCMA-led DIBCAC assessment for the highest-sensitivity programs. We build the enclave architecture that separates CUI from non-CUI workloads (typically AWS GovCloud US-West, Azure Government, or an on-premises segmented network), document the System Security Plan (SSP) and Plan of Action and Milestones (POA&M), implement the 110 NIST 800-171 controls with the SPRS scoring rationale, and stand up the FedRAMP Moderate-equivalent baseline that satisfies the 252.204-7012 flow-down. The SpaceX, Anduril, Skydio, and broader prime subcontract chains have all telegraphed Level 2 as the procurement floor, and DCMA DIBCAC has begun targeted assessments in 2024 and 2025. ITAR technical-data controls and the deemed-export rules for foreign-national access are layered on top with documented physical and logical segregation.

How do you handle HIPAA Security Rule and California CMIA for LA health systems and digital health startups?

HIPAA Security Rule (45 CFR 164.302-318) governs the administrative, physical, and technical safeguards for ePHI. CMIA (California Civil Code 56) layers California-specific confidentiality requirements with stricter rules on disclosure and broader patient remedies (CMIA permits private right of action with statutory damages, while HIPAA does not). The California AG has actively enforced CMIA, and OCR has actively enforced HIPAA. We build programs aligned to the OCR Audit Protocol as the evidence checklist, with risk analysis under 164.308(a)(1)(ii)(A), workforce security and training, access control, audit controls, integrity, transmission security, encryption of ePHI at rest and in transit (AES-256, TLS 1.3), the breach risk assessment workflow under 164.402, and the notification playbook that maps the HIPAA 60-day individual-notification clock, the HHS Secretary notification, and the California 15-business-day breach notification under California Civil Code 1798.82. Business Associate Agreements (BAAs) are templated for every vendor relationship, with the subcontractor flow-down required by HITECH. For digital health startups (the LA telehealth, mental-health, and femtech cluster), we layer SOC 2 Type II and HITRUST CSF on top where enterprise hospital procurement requires it, and we segment IoMT and medical-device traffic per the FDA premarket cybersecurity guidance.

How do you protect pre-release film, TV, and unreleased music content against insider exfiltration after the Sony 2014 lessons?

The Sony Pictures 2014 breach (attributed to DPRK Lazarus actors, with persistent reconnaissance via spear-phishing, lateral movement, mass exfiltration of email archives, payroll, and pre-release film materials, and a destructive wiper component) reset the insider-threat baseline for every studio CISO function. Our pre-release protection program layers: hardware-rooted FIDO2 MFA for every account with access to unreleased materials (no SMS or push fallback that can be bypassed), least-privilege access with just-in-time elevation through PAM (CyberArk, BeyondTrust, Delinea), watermarked screener distribution through Verance Aspect, ContentArmor, Convergent Risks Witness, or Cinea so every leak traces to a recipient, encrypted dailies workflows on Aspera, Signiant, or MASV with end-to-end TLS 1.3 and AES-256 at rest, DLP on Microsoft Purview, Forcepoint, or Symantec for content-aware egress controls, EDR with behavioural detection on CrowdStrike Falcon or SentinelOne Singularity, UEBA in the SIEM tuned to insider-threat patterns (off-hours access, anomalous downloads, bulk transfers, USB usage spikes), and a TPN-audited Asset Protection Plan that documents the chain of custody from camera to delivery. Embargo workflows for review screeners and press junket materials have their own segmented infrastructure. Sony Pictures itself rebuilt to a markedly different posture after 2014, and that posture (plus the Disney, Warner, and Paramount equivalents) is the bar we build to.

Which SIEM, EDR, and CNAPP vendors do you recommend for LA studios versus aerospace versus healthcare?

For Hollywood studios and the post-production tier, CrowdStrike Falcon and SentinelOne Singularity both have heavy install bases (CrowdStrike particularly at Disney, Warner Bros Discovery, and Sony Pictures patterns; SentinelOne at Paramount-tier and the independent VFX shops), with Splunk Enterprise Security or Microsoft Sentinel for SIEM, Wiz for CNAPP, Okta for identity, and Verance plus ContentArmor for watermarking. For aerospace and defense, the CMMC 2.0 enclave pattern is Splunk Enterprise Security on-premises or in AWS GovCloud, CrowdStrike Falcon (with the FedRAMP High Falcon for Government tier where the program requires it), Microsoft Entra ID Government, Tenable.sc for vulnerability management with the STIG and CIS benchmark integration, and the FIPS 140-3 validated cryptographic modules across the stack. For healthcare, the pattern is Microsoft Sentinel or Splunk for SIEM with the HIPAA-eligible AWS or Azure region (us-west-2 or West US 2), CrowdStrike Falcon or SentinelOne for EDR with the HIPAA BAA executed, Wiz CNAPP for the cloud workloads, Imprivata for clinician identity and SSO, and Claroty or Medigate for IoMT and medical-device segmentation. We size the stack to the firm; a 300-person VFX vendor does not need the same SIEM footprint as Cedars-Sinai, and we will say so before you sign the Splunk contract.

How do you handle California deepfake laws (AB 730 and AB 602) and the SB 1001 bot disclosure for entertainment and marketing programs?

California AB 730 (signed 2019, with subsequent amendments) prohibits the distribution of materially deceptive deepfake audio or visual media of a candidate within 60 days of an election with intent to injure the candidate or deceive voters, with civil and limited criminal remedies. AB 602 (signed 2019, amended subsequently) creates a civil cause of action for the depiction of an identifiable person in sexually explicit deepfake material without consent, with significant statutory damages. SB 1001 (in force since 2019) requires disclosure of automated bot identity when used to incentivise a commercial transaction or influence an election. For entertainment clients we screen AI-generated and synthetic-content workflows against AB 730 and AB 602 for any content depicting real persons, with documented consent for any synthetic likeness use and a labelling policy aligned with the C2PA Content Credentials standard for provenance. For marketing programs we screen chatbot and AI-assistant deployments against SB 1001 and the FTC AI guidance on disclosure. We do not build a chatbot that passes itself off as human in a commercial context, and we will not build a synthetic-likeness creative without documented consent and a clear C2PA-aligned disclosure path.

How do you support incident response and forensics for an LA studio, aerospace contractor, or health system?

Our LA incident-response playbook is built for the actual sequence each vertical faces. For studios: detect on EDR plus DLP plus UEBA, contain via CrowdStrike Falcon or SentinelOne network containment, preserve with Velociraptor and KAPE, coordinate with the FBI Los Angeles Field Office Cyber Task Force (which has primary federal cyber jurisdiction in the LA region and an active relationship with the major studio CISO functions), engage MPA notification protocols where unreleased content is exposed, notify SEC under Item 1.05 for public-company parents (Disney, Paramount, Warner Bros Discovery, Sony Group ADR), and prepare TPN audit re-baseline for the impacted vendor. For aerospace: DIBCAC and DC3 DCISE incident reporting per DFARS 252.204-7012 (the 72-hour clock to report cyber incidents involving CUI to DoD), parallel notification to the prime contractor under the flow-down, and forensics handled under chain-of-custody discipline that supports a DCSA investigation if the program is cleared. For healthcare: OCR breach notification within 60 days, California AG and affected-individual notification under Civil Code 1798.82 within 15 business days for breaches affecting more than 500 California residents, HHS Secretary notification, and BAA-driven vendor coordination. Retained DFIR firms we coordinate with include Mandiant, CrowdStrike Services, Kroll Cyber, Stroz Friedberg, Unit 42, and Arete; outside counsel with LA cyber benches includes Latham and Watkins, Gibson Dunn, Munger Tolles, O\'Melveny and Myers, and Loeb and Loeb (the studio incumbent for entertainment-specific work).

How do you handle California CCPA, CPRA, and the September 2024 CPPA enforcement uptick for LA consumer brands?

CCPA (in force since January 2020) and CPRA (the November 2020 ballot measure expansion, in force since January 2023 with the California Privacy Protection Agency standing up as the dedicated regulator) govern California-resident personal information rights, with the CPPA actively issuing enforcement actions and the California AG retaining parallel authority. The September 2024 CPPA enforcement uptick (with public settlements against ad-tech and DTC violators) has reshaped what LA consumer brands can do with cross-context behavioural advertising, sensitive personal information, and Global Privacy Control signals. We audit the data flow against the CPRA Section 1798 requirements, implement the Right to Know, Right to Delete, Right to Correct, Right to Limit Use of Sensitive PI, and Right to Opt Out of Sale or Sharing flows with documented evidence, configure the CMP (OneTrust, Cookiebot, Didomi, Sourcepoint) to honour the Global Privacy Control browser-level signal as the CPPA has required, build the data inventory and processing record that the CPPA will request during an audit, and update the privacy policy and the Notice at Collection to the current CPPA enforcement standard. Contracts with vendors (service providers, contractors, and third parties under CPRA terminology) are templated to the current CPPA model. AB 1008 (the 2024 amendment confirming AI inferences as personal information) is wired into the inventory.
