Product Design Services We Offer in Tokyo
Tokyo product teams expect a level of typographic and informational craft that Western design playbooks rarely address. Rakuten Ichiba defines the dense, information-rich Japanese e-commerce aesthetic that outperforms minimalist Western patterns in conversion testing on JP audiences, while Mercari, SmartHR, and freee have shown that restrained product UI also has a strong market. Our product design services span both poles. We run generative research with Japanese-speaking participants (recruited through dscout JP, Lookback, and in-person at our Tokyo meeting space in Shibuya), build design systems with proper Japanese typography setting (Noto Sans JP, Hiragino Kaku Gothic, Yu Gothic) and CJK-aware spacing, and deliver UI work that distinguishes keigo politeness levels for B2B versus B2C copy, sonkeigo and kenjougo where appropriate. Every engagement produces a JIS Z 8071 universal design review and a JIS X 8341-3 accessibility statement.
Our Product Design Development Process
We run discovery, definition, design, and delivery on JST hours so Tokyo product, engineering, and legal teams get synchronous nemawashi-style consensus building rather than asynchronous handoff. Discovery opens with stakeholder interviews conducted in Japanese, an APPI design constraint workshop where the product touches personal information, and a keigo register decision (which speech level does the product use to address the user, and does that shift between onboarding, transactional flows, and error states). Definition produces a problem statement, jobs-to-be-done, and a measurable success metric tied to Japanese benchmarks (Rakuten conversion baselines for e-commerce, SmartHR adoption baselines for HR SaaS, freee retention baselines for SMB finance) rather than Silicon Valley metrics that often translate poorly. Design sprints run two weeks with reviews in mixed Japanese and English, prototypes tested with five to eight Tokyo participants per round including testing with older users (60-plus) for any product targeting general consumer reach.

1-2 WeeksWe conduct stakeholder interviews, competitive analysis, user surveys, and analytics review to understand your users' needs, pain points, and goals.
Information Architecture
1-2 WeeksWe define the content structure, navigation patterns, and user flows that form the backbone of an intuitive user experience.
Wireframing & Prototyping
2-3 WeeksCreate low and mid-fidelity wireframes for key screens, then build interactive prototypes for stakeholder review and usability testing.
Visual Design
3-4 WeeksApply visual styling, micro-interactions, and animations to create polished, high-fidelity designs that reflect your brand and delight users.
Design Handoff
1 WeekWe prepare developer-ready assets with detailed specifications, export all design tokens, and support your engineering team during implementation.
Technologies We Use for Product Design
Tokyo product design stacks lean on Figma for canvas work, Adobe XD for clients with existing Adobe enterprise contracts, and Sketch for legacy organisations. We build component libraries with proper CJK typography pipelines covering Noto Sans JP, Hiragino, and Yu Gothic with explicit fallback chains, subset JIS Level 1 and 2 kanji to keep web font payloads under 200KB, and implement CSS writing-mode for vertical text where editorial, traditional, or formal content requires tategaki. Ruby annotation is handled with the HTML5 ruby element and Furigana Library for React or Vue surfaces, with proper kinsoku shori line-breaking. For research we use Dovetail and Lookback with Japanese transcription, plus in-person sessions at our Shibuya space. Accessibility validation runs through Axe DevTools, manual screen reader testing on NVDA (with Japanese voices), and JIS X 8341-3 self-evaluation against the Information Accessibility Council (JIS) test procedures.
