ERP Development Solutions for Boston Businesses

Massachusetts still makes things, and the ERP problems in Greater Boston are physical ones. Analog Devices designs and builds semiconductors from Wilmington. Teradyne builds automatic test equipment in North Reading. Waters Corporation manufactures analytical instruments in Milford. Boston Scientific builds regulated medical devices from Marlborough. Bose builds audio hardware in Framingham. iRobot in Bedford, Amazon Robotics in North Reading and Berkshire Grey in Bedford run robotics supply chains with long-lead electromechanical parts. Thermo Fisher Scientific runs a life sciences instrument and services business from Waltham. GE Vernova runs power, wind and electrification manufacturing from a Cambridge headquarters. Moderna, Vertex Pharmaceuticals and Takeda's American operations run pharmaceutical production and clinical supply out of Cambridge and Boston. Draper in Cambridge and MIT Lincoln Laboratory in Lexington anchor a defense electronics supplier base along Route 128 where export control, not cost, decides how a system is built. These companies do not need a general ledger with a nicer interface. They need lot and serial traceability that holds under recall, bills of material that survive engineering change, revenue recognition that reconciles to the audited statements, and payroll that satisfies a set of Massachusetts rules most national ERP templates get wrong. The Commonwealth requires advance sales and use tax payment by the twenty-fifth day of the last month of the filing period once prior-year liability exceeds USD 150,000 under M.G.L. c. 62C section 16B. It imposes a 4 percent surtax on taxable income above one million dollars under c. 62 section 4(d), effective for tax years beginning on or after January 1, 2023 and indexed since. It runs its own paid family and medical leave contribution scheme under c. 175M, its own earned sick time accrual under c. 149 section 148C, and a pay range disclosure duty under Chapter 141 of the Acts of 2024. Codazz has delivered more than 500 projects since 2018 with over 200 engineers working from Edmonton, Canada and Chandigarh, India. We do not have a Boston office and we do not pretend to.

What We Build

ERP Development Services We Offer in Boston

ERP work for Massachusetts manufacturers falls into three tracks that we staff differently. Implementation and extension is the first: standing up SAP S/4HANA, Oracle NetSuite, Oracle Fusion Cloud ERP, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations, Acumatica or Odoo, then writing the extensions the business actually runs on, with proper source control, automated regression tests and a promotion pipeline rather than changes made directly in production. The second is custom ERP and ERP-adjacent systems, which we build when a process is genuinely differentiating and no package models it, most often in configure-to-order engineering, contract manufacturing scheduling, clinical supply logistics and field service against installed instruments. The third is integration and modernization, which is where most Boston programs quietly live: connecting ERP to manufacturing execution, product lifecycle management, warehouse management, quality management and electronic data interchange partners, and strangling a legacy instance one module at a time instead of a big-bang replacement. Around all three we deliver data migration with reconciliation you can hand to auditors, cutover planning with a real rollback, financial close automation, and Massachusetts payroll and tax logic implemented as tested code rather than as a configuration note nobody can find later.

Industry Expertise

ERP Development for Boston's Key Industries

Four Massachusetts sectors set the requirements. Precision electronics and instruments, meaning companies in the mold of Analog Devices, Teradyne, Waters and Bose, need engineering change orders that propagate correctly through multi-level bills of material, serial genealogy, and standard costing that survives a component substitution mid-quarter. Medical devices, with Boston Scientific in Marlborough and a dense supplier base around it, add design history file discipline, unique device identification, complaint handling tied back to lot and serial, and FDA 21 CFR Part 11 controls over electronic records and signatures. Life sciences and pharmaceutical manufacturing around Moderna, Vertex and Takeda adds GxP computer system validation, clinical supply chain with expiry and temperature excursion handling, and controlled-substance and serialization requirements under the Drug Supply Chain Security Act. Defense and aerospace suppliers feeding the Route 128 electronics cluster, MIT Lincoln Laboratory and Draper add export control under ITAR and the Export Administration Regulations plus Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification obligations, which change where the ERP can be hosted and who can hold an account in it. Robotics and consumer hardware add long-lead component allocation and contract manufacturer visibility.

Our Process

Our ERP Development Development Process

ERP delivery is scheduled around your calendar, not ours. Boston runs Eastern Time and our Edmonton engineers run Mountain Time, two hours behind, so a 9:00 AM Eastern kickoff is a 7:00 AM Mountain start here, and our Chandigarh team covers the overnight window, which matters most at month-end and quarter-end when interface failures and batch job errors need to be triaged before your controller logs in. We open with a fit-gap workshop across finance, operations, quality and human resources at the same table, because ERP failures are almost always cross-functional. Discovery produces four artifacts before any build: a process inventory with named owners, a data profile of the legacy system showing exactly how bad the master data is, a compliance scope covering export control, GxP validation and Massachusetts payroll and tax obligations, and an integration map with each interface rated by fragility. Build runs module by module against a signed process design, with a working system walked through by the finance and operations owners at the end of every second week rather than shown as slides. Migration is rehearsed at least three times against production-shaped volumes, with a reconciliation pack comparing trial balance, open purchase orders, work in process, inventory valuation and subledger detail. Cutover ships with a rollback path, a documented parallel run, and hypercare that covers a full close cycle.

Technology

Technologies We Use for ERP Development

Package work runs on SAP S/4HANA with ABAP and the SAP Business Technology Platform, Oracle NetSuite with SuiteScript and SuiteFlow, Oracle Fusion Cloud ERP, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations with X++ and the Power Platform, Acumatica, or Odoo and ERPNext where a mid-market manufacturer wants source access. Custom modules and services are written in Java with Spring Boot, C# on .NET, or TypeScript on NestJS, backed by PostgreSQL, SQL Server or Oracle Database depending on the estate. Integration is the real engineering: Apache Kafka with Debezium for change data capture, MuleSoft or Azure Integration Services where the buyer already owns the license, and EDI over X12 850, 856, 810 and 940 transaction sets for retail and distribution partners. Shop floor connectivity runs OPC UA and MQTT into manufacturing execution systems, with PTC Windchill, Siemens Teamcenter or Dassault ENOVIA on the product lifecycle side. Finance reporting lands in Snowflake or Databricks with dbt models so the close pack is reproducible. Hosting defaults to AWS us-east-1 or Azure eastus and eastus2, both in Virginia, with GCP us-east4 as an alternative and the AWS Boston Local Zone us-east-1-bos-1a available where a plant needs low-latency access to a cloud workload.

Why Choose Us

Why Boston Businesses Choose Codazz for ERP Development

We combine world-class engineering with local market understanding to deliver erp development solutions that drive real business outcomes.

🏭

Built For Massachusetts Manufacturing

Precision instruments, medical devices, robotics and life sciences production drive Greater Boston ERP demand, from Wilmington and North Reading to Marlborough and Milford. We build engineering change propagation, serial genealogy, lot traceability and standard costing that hold up under a recall investigation rather than only at month-end close.

🧾

Commonwealth Tax And Payroll In Code

Advance sales tax under M.G.L. c. 62C section 16B, the 4 percent surtax under c. 62 section 4(d), paid family and medical leave under c. 175M, earned sick time under c. 149 section 148C and Chapter 141 pay range duties are implemented as tested logic, not configuration notes.

🔐

Export Control And CMMC Boundaries

For Route 128 defense suppliers we scope a controlled enclave with record-level United States persons access, no offshore administration, and audit evidence an assessor can sample under 32 CFR Part 170. ITAR classification lives in the item master so bills of material cannot leak technical data.

🧪

GxP Validation As Engineering

Traceability matrices linking each user requirement to an executed test result, automated regression runs that produce evidence instead of a fresh manual cycle, risk-proportionate coverage under a computer software assurance approach, and FDA 21 CFR Part 11 identity, signature and audit trail controls wired directly into the deployment pipeline.

📍

Local Expertise

Our team understands the regulatory landscape, business culture, and user expectations specific to your city. We combine global engineering standards with hyper-local market knowledge to build products that resonate with your target audience from day one.

Ask a Question

ERP pricing tracks scope, entity count and integration surface, and Boston is an expensive market for the local consulting alternative, with senior enterprise applications talent priced close to New York levels. Honest ranges look like this. A discovery and fit-gap engagement, meaning process inventory, legacy data profiling, integration mapping, a compliance scope covering export control and Massachusetts payroll and tax rules, and a costed roadmap, typically runs USD 35,000 to 90,000 over four to eight weeks and is worth doing before committing to a platform. A single-entity implementation or a serious extension program covering finance, procurement, inventory, production and a handful of integrations typically runs USD 150,000 to 450,000. A multi-entity or multi-plant program with manufacturing execution and product lifecycle integration, electronic data interchange onboarding, warehouse management, validated GxP environments or export-controlled enclaves runs USD 450,000 to 1,500,000 and upward, usually phased across eighteen to thirty months. Software licensing sits on top of all of these and is paid to the vendor, not to us. Codazz delivers from Edmonton and Chandigarh rather than a Boston office, which is a real part of the cost difference at equal seniority. We quote fixed fee per phase against a signed statement of work and will say plainly when a phase should be cut.

M.G.L. c. 62C section 16B requires vendors and room occupancy operators whose cumulative liability in the immediately preceding calendar year exceeded USD 150,000 to make an advance payment no later than the twenty-fifth day of the last month of the filing period. The statute gives two bases: tax collected through the twenty-first day of that month, or a safe harbor of not less than 80 per cent of the tax collected on gross receipts from taxable sales during the immediately preceding filing period. Most national ERP templates have no concept of this, so finance teams end up computing it in a spreadsheet every month and occasionally getting it wrong. We implement it as a scheduled job inside the tax subledger rather than as a report: the system computes the through-the-twenty-first collected figure and the safe harbor figure, records which basis was used, posts the advance payment as a distinct liability entry so it reconciles cleanly against the full-period return, and raises an exception if source transactions post late and change the basis after submission. We also implement the threshold test itself so the obligation switches on automatically the year a growing business crosses it, rather than being discovered during an audit. Massachusetts sourcing and exemption certificate handling sit alongside it, integrated with Avalara or Vertex where the buyer already uses one.

More than most vendors configure. Paid family and medical leave under M.G.L. c. 175M requires contributions remitted to the state trust fund, with an employee deduction for medical leave capped at 40 per cent of the required contribution while the family leave contribution may be deducted in full, and no contribution required on wages above the federal Social Security contribution and benefit base. Employers with fewer than twenty-five covered individuals owe no employer share but must still withhold and remit the employee portion, which is the detail payroll configurations most often get backwards. Earned sick time under c. 149 section 148C accrues at one hour per thirty hours worked, caps at forty hours a year, carries over up to forty unused hours, is paid for employers with eleven or more employees and unpaid below that, and cannot be used in the first ninety days of employment. Chapter 141 of the Acts of 2024, approved July 31, 2024, requires employers with twenty-five or more Massachusetts employees to post a pay range in job listings under the new section 105F of c. 149, which section 13 of the act delayed until one year after the act took effect, and requires employers with one hundred or more Massachusetts employees to file copies of their federal EEO wage data reports with the state secretary by February 1. State income tax withholding must account for the additional 4 percent surtax on taxable income above one million dollars under c. 62 section 4(d), effective for tax years beginning on or after January 1, 2023 and adjusted annually. We also strip out dead retail Sunday and holiday premium pay logic, which Chapter 121 of the Acts of 2018 stepped down year by year before removing the premium requirement entirely, but which is still sitting in older payroll configurations.

Yes, and the constraints shape the architecture from the first week rather than being added at the end. Under the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification program rule at 32 CFR Part 170, effective December 16, 2024, and the Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement rule implementing it in contracts, published September 10, 2025 and effective November 10, 2025, controlled unclassified information carries a defined assessment level that flows through to subcontractors. In ERP terms that means the environment holding technical data has to be scoped deliberately: an enclave with its own identity boundary, United States persons access control enforced at the record level rather than by policy memo, no offshore administrative access to the controlled instance, encryption meeting the applicable federal standards, and audit logging that a third-party assessor can sample. ITAR and the Export Administration Regulations add classification of parts and drawings inside the item master, so a bill of material explosion cannot expose controlled technical data to an unlicensed viewer, and so a contract manufacturer portal shows exactly what the license permits. Our Chandigarh team does not touch controlled enclaves. Cleared or United States-based work is scoped explicitly in the statement of work, and we would rather lose that scope than misrepresent it.

By treating validation as engineering rather than as a documentation exercise performed after the fact. For life sciences and medical device manufacturers, FDA 21 CFR Part 11 governs electronic records and electronic signatures, which means the ERP needs enforced unique identity, no shared accounts, signature manifestations that record the signer, time and meaning, audit trails that cannot be edited by the people whose actions they record, and record retention that survives an upgrade. We build a traceability matrix that links each user requirement to a functional specification, a test case and an executed result, and we automate the test layer so a regression run after a patch produces evidence rather than a fresh manual cycle. Risk assessment follows a computer software assurance approach so that high-risk functions such as batch release, lot disposition, expiry handling and label content get deep scripted testing while low-risk reporting gets proportionate coverage. Change control is wired into the deployment pipeline so a production change cannot ship without an approved record. Periodic review, supplier assessment and data integrity controls covering the attributable, legible, contemporaneous, original and accurate principles are part of the handover package, not a follow-on project.

Implement a package for the general ledger, procurement, inventory, order management and payroll, and build custom only where the process is a genuine competitive advantage or where no package models it honestly. Finance and compliance functions are commodity capabilities with heavy regulatory maintenance, and rebuilding them means owning every tax table, every statutory report and every audit control forever. The parts worth building are usually narrower: configure-to-order product configurators for instrument makers, finite capacity scheduling for contract manufacturers with mixed lot sizes, clinical supply allocation for trial logistics, field service dispatch against a large installed base, and portals that give contract manufacturers and distributors exactly the view their agreement allows. We build those as services that integrate with the package over documented interfaces rather than as customizations buried inside it, so upgrades stay possible and the custom code has its own test suite and release cycle. The failure mode we are most often called in to repair is the opposite pattern: heavy modification inside a package until the vendor upgrade path is gone and the business is frozen on an unsupported version. Call +1 (403) 604-8692 if that describes your current situation.
