Service Overview

Product Design Solutions for Abu Dhabi Businesses

Product design for Abu Dhabi is a bidirectional problem before it is an aesthetic one. Every serious product here ships in Arabic and English at the same quality, and the two languages do not behave the same way. Arabic runs right to left but embeds Latin brand names, Western digits, phone numbers and currency codes that run left to right inside the same sentence, which means the layout engine, not the designer, decides where things land unless someone has thought about it. Arabic type needs more vertical space than Latin at the same optical size. Arabic copy is frequently shorter than English, so a button that fits in English overflows or looks empty in Arabic. Icons that imply direction have to mirror and icons that do not must never mirror. On top of that, Abu Dhabi's user base is roughly 85 percent expatriate, so the same product is used by Emirati nationals, and by residents from India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Egypt, Bangladesh, the UK and dozens of other countries, with very different digital literacy, device profiles and expectations of how a government or bank should speak to them. Codazz designs products for this market, and the buyer profiles are consistent: early-stage teams in the Hub71 cohort inside Abu Dhabi Global Market, digital teams inside conventional and Islamic banks, government service teams working to Abu Dhabi Digital Authority standards and the TAMM service model, and healthcare, real estate and mobility operators. We work from Edmonton, Canada and Chandigarh, India with no Abu Dhabi office, which we state plainly, and we run research with real Abu Dhabi users rather than designing from assumption. Our Chandigarh team sits 1.5 hours ahead of Gulf Standard Time, so design critique and stakeholder review happen inside your working day. Founded 2018, 500-plus projects delivered, 200-plus engineers.

What We Build

Product Design Services We Offer in Abu Dhabi

Our product design work in Abu Dhabi covers four things. Discovery and research means recruiting and running sessions with the actual population that uses the product, which in this city means deliberate quotas across Emirati nationals and the major expatriate communities, in Arabic and English and often in a third language, rather than a convenience sample of colleagues. Product definition covers service blueprints, journey maps and information architecture, which matters most for government and regulated services where the digital journey has to reconcile with an in-person step, a physical document or a third-party approval. Interface design means a bilingual design system built from the start: tokens that carry logical properties rather than left and right, type scales tuned separately for Arabic and Latin, and components documented with their mirrored behaviour. Design engineering means we hand over something a developer can build without guessing, including Figma libraries wired to code tokens, Storybook implementations of the components with RTL variants, and written rules for the cases that always break, such as mixed-direction strings, numerals, dates and truncation.

Industry Expertise

Product Design for Abu Dhabi's Key Industries

Government and public services is the most demanding category. Products aligned to Abu Dhabi Digital Authority standards and the TAMM ecosystem have to work for a user who may be completing a permit renewal in Arabic on a mid-range Android phone, and the design has to reconcile the digital journey with any remaining physical or in-person step. Financial services covers retail banking apps at institutions including First Abu Dhabi Bank, Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank and Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, where Islamic finance products need their own information architecture because a murabaha or ijara product does not map onto a conventional loan screen. Healthcare covers patient-facing products for groups including Burjeel Holdings and Pure Health, where appointment booking, results and consent flows sit under Department of Health policy. Real estate covers Aldar, Modon and the broker market, where off-plan purchase journeys involve payment plans and milestone documents that most property apps handle badly. Startups from the Hub71 cohort inside Abu Dhabi Global Market need speed and a design system that will survive the next funding round, and mobility and tourism operators need products that work for short-stay visitors with no local account.

Our Process

Our Product Design Development Process

We start with a bidirectional audit, even on a greenfield product, because the decisions that make Arabic work are made in week one and are painful to retrofit. That audit sets the numeral policy, the date policy including whether Hijri dates appear alongside Gregorian, the type stack for both scripts, the mirroring rules and the copy expansion budget. Research follows, and the debrief happens on the same day as the session rather than the following week, which is most of the difference between research that changes a design and research that decorates a deck. Chandigarh's 1.5 hour offset from Gulf Standard Time is what makes that turnaround ordinary rather than heroic. We design in Arabic and English in parallel rather than designing in English and localising later, because the second approach reliably produces an Arabic version that looks like a translation of a foreign product. Prototypes are tested in both directions with users of both languages. Accessibility is checked continuously against WCAG 2.2 AA, including colour contrast, target size, focus order in a mirrored layout and screen reader behaviour with Arabic content, which is where most teams discover their component library was never tested. Handover includes a written localisation and mirroring specification, not just a Figma link.

Technologies We Use for Product Design

Design lives in Figma with a variables-based token layer split into primitives and semantic tokens, so a theme change or a direction change does not require touching component internals. Tokens export to code through Style Dictionary or an equivalent pipeline so the design system and the implementation cannot drift silently. Implementation uses CSS logical properties throughout, which means inline-start and inline-end rather than left and right, plus the dir attribute on the document rather than a duplicated right-to-left stylesheet, which is the pattern that always rots. Typefaces are chosen from families with genuinely designed Arabic cuts rather than a Latin family with an automatic fallback: IBM Plex Sans Arabic and Noto Sans Arabic are safe open options, and licensed families including the Dubai font family and commercial Arabic faces are used where brand requires it, with licensing confirmed before the design is signed off. Components are built and documented in Storybook with an explicit RTL variant per component. Prototypes and usability sessions run on Maze or moderated over video. Accessibility testing uses axe plus manual screen reader passes with VoiceOver and NVDA against Arabic content, because automated tools miss bidirectional reading order problems entirely.

Why Choose Us

Why Abu Dhabi Businesses Choose Codazz for Product Design

We combine world-class engineering with local market understanding to deliver product design solutions that drive real business outcomes.

↔️

Bidirectional From Week One

We run a bidirectional audit before the first screen: numeral policy, date and Hijri policy, dual type scales, mirroring rules and a copy expansion budget. Arabic and English are designed in parallel, never English first and localised later, because the retrofit is where products lose their Arabic quality.

🧪

Research With The Real Population

Abu Dhabi is roughly 85 percent expatriate, so we recruit to quotas across Emirati, Arabic-speaking expatriate, South Asian, Filipino and Western segments, in the participant's own language, and on mid-range Android hardware as well as recent iPhones. Convenience samples mislead here more than almost anywhere.

🎛️

Tokens Wired To Code

Figma variables split into primitives and semantic tokens, exported through a Style Dictionary pipeline, implemented with CSS logical properties and a dir attribute rather than a duplicated RTL stylesheet. Every component ships a documented RTL variant in Storybook so design and build cannot drift.

WCAG 2.2 AA Verified In Arabic

Reading order checked where mirrored visual order diverges from DOM order, screen reader passes with Arabic voices on VoiceOver and NVDA, contrast validated with Arabic readers rather than by ratio alone, and error messages written in Arabic rather than translated from English.

Ask a Question

We price by phase and scope rather than by a headline rate. A discovery and research sprint, including recruiting Abu Dhabi participants across Emirati and major expatriate segments, moderated sessions in Arabic and English, a synthesis report and a prioritised opportunity map, typically runs AED 70,000 to 160,000 over four to six weeks. End-to-end design of a single product surface, meaning one mobile app or one web product with a bilingual design system, full Arabic and English screens, tested prototypes and an implementation-ready handover, typically runs AED 200,000 to 600,000. A multi-surface design system programme covering web, iOS, Android and an internal admin console, with tokens wired to code, a Storybook implementation with RTL variants, accessibility conformance work and a governance model, typically runs AED 600,000 to 1,800,000. Ongoing embedded design capacity is quoted monthly. Delivering from Chandigarh and Edmonton keeps our rate well below the London, Zurich and New York studios that Abu Dhabi enterprises often engage, and below the local rates of the large consultancies, while our Chandigarh team's 1.5 hour offset from Gulf Standard Time removes the review lag that usually makes remote design expensive in rework.

A predictable list, and it is worth knowing before you commit to an English-first build. Layouts hard coded with left and right padding do not mirror, so a retrofit becomes a second stylesheet that immediately drifts from the first. Mixed-direction strings render in the wrong order, which is how you get a phone number reversed or a price showing the currency on the wrong side. Numeral policy is usually never decided, so the product shows Western digits in one place and Arabic-Indic digits in another with no rule. Truncation and ellipsis logic assumes left-to-right, so Arabic strings get cut at the wrong end. Icons mirror indiscriminately, so a back arrow flips correctly and a clock face flips into nonsense. Line height set for Latin clips Arabic diacritics. Fonts fall back to a system Arabic face that has nothing to do with the brand. Form validation messages written for English grammar read as machine translation in Arabic. Focus order in a mirrored layout follows the DOM rather than the visual order. Each of these is cheap to prevent in week one and expensive to fix in month nine, which is why we run the bidirectional audit first.

Deliberately, with quotas, and never with a convenience sample. Abu Dhabi's resident population is roughly 85 percent expatriate, so a research panel drawn from your own staff or from an English-speaking professional network will systematically mislead you about how the product is actually used. We set recruitment quotas across the segments that matter for the product: Emirati nationals, Arabic-speaking expatriates from Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon whose Arabic dialect and formality expectations differ, South Asian residents from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, Filipino residents, and Western expatriates. We recruit for device profile too, because a product tested only on recent iPhones will fail on the mid-range Android hardware a large part of the workforce actually carries. Sessions run in the participant's preferred language with a moderator who speaks it, not through a translator, because a translated session loses the hesitation and the misreading that are the useful signal. We also test the Arabic interface with people who habitually use Arabic interfaces rather than with bilingual users who default to English, since the latter will not notice Arabic problems.

It depends on the product, and the wrong answer in either direction causes trouble. Government services, Islamic finance products, HR and leave systems, and anything touching religious observance generally need Hijri dates visible, usually alongside Gregorian rather than instead of it. Consumer commerce, travel and most B2B software generally do not. The engineering detail that trips teams up is that the Hijri calendar is lunar and observational in some determinations, so different Hijri calculation variants produce dates one day apart, and a system that stores a Hijri date as a string rather than storing the underlying instant will eventually produce a mismatch with another system. Our rule is to store the canonical instant and render Hijri as a presentation concern using a documented calculation variant, with the variant recorded so two systems can be reconciled. Design side, a dual date picker needs both calendars visible without doubling the cognitive load, and it needs to handle the case where a user knows the Hijri date but not the Gregorian one. Ramadan also changes working hours and service expectations, which belongs in scheduling and availability design rather than in the date component.

By treating the contract structure as the information architecture rather than as a label on a conventional product. A murabaha is a cost-plus sale, an ijara is a lease, a musharaka is a partnership, and a sukuk is not a bond. If the interface says loan, interest rate and repayment schedule and simply swaps the vocabulary, the product misrepresents itself and the Sharia supervisory board will say so. The design implications are concrete. Profit rate disclosure differs from interest rate disclosure and the comparison the customer wants to make is different. Ownership transfer points in an ijara or diminishing musharaka need to be visible in the journey because they are what the customer is actually buying. Early settlement behaves differently and the screen has to explain it rather than hide it behind a call-us link. Fee structures are itemised differently. And approval flows include a Sharia compliance dimension that has no counterpart in a conventional product. We design these with the institution's product and Sharia teams in the room, and we test comprehension with customers rather than assuming that correct terminology equals understood terminology.

We design and test to WCAG 2.2 level AA as the working standard, which is what most Abu Dhabi enterprise and government procurement documents reference either directly or through an equivalent requirement, and it is the sensible floor regardless. Arabic changes how you verify it more than what the criteria say. Colour contrast is script-neutral, but Arabic letterforms are lighter and more connected than Latin at the same weight, so a contrast ratio that passes technically can still read poorly, and we test with Arabic-reading users rather than trusting the ratio alone. Reading order is the big one: in a mirrored layout the visual order and the DOM order can diverge, and screen readers follow the DOM, so a layout that looks correct can be announced in the wrong sequence. Screen reader testing needs Arabic voices enabled, and behaviour differs meaningfully between VoiceOver and NVDA with mixed-direction content. Target size and spacing matter more on the mid-range Android devices that a large share of Abu Dhabi's workforce uses. Form errors need to be announced, not only shown, and the Arabic error copy needs to be written rather than translated.
