Service Overview

ERP Development Solutions for Vancouver Businesses

ERP projects in Vancouver fail on tax and customs more often than on manufacturing logic, and the reason is that British Columbia never harmonised its sales tax. BC charges a 7 percent Provincial Sales Tax that sits entirely separate from the 5 percent federal GST, with its own registration, its own exemption rules, and a self-assessment obligation on goods brought into the province for use here. Ontario charges 13 percent HST as a single blended tax. Quebec charges GST plus QST. Alberta charges GST alone. A Vancouver company selling into all four is running four different tax treatments through one order line, and an ERP configured by someone who assumed Canada works like a single VAT jurisdiction will produce returns that do not reconcile. Customs is the second trap. The Canada Border Services Agency's CARM system became the official system of record for the assessment and collection of duties and taxes on commercial imports on October 21, 2024, which moved financial security, commercial accounting declarations and Release Prior to Payment onto importers directly rather than leaving them with the broker. For a city whose economy runs through the largest port in Canada, that reaches almost every distributor, manufacturer and retailer in the Lower Mainland. Layer on the payroll side, where the BC Employer Health Tax has applied to BC remuneration since January 1, 2019 and WorkSafeBC premiums vary by classification unit, and the local content of an ERP build is substantial. Codazz has delivered more than 500 projects since 2018 with roughly 200 engineers in Edmonton, Alberta and Chandigarh, India. We serve Vancouver manufacturers, forestry and marine operators, food processors, distributors and cleantech firms remotely, one time zone away, with no Vancouver office. Call +1 (403) 604-8692.

What We Build

ERP Development Services We Offer in Vancouver

Most Vancouver ERP work is one of four jobs. Implementation and configuration is the first, where the client has selected SAP S/4HANA, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain, Oracle NetSuite, Acumatica or Odoo and needs the chart of accounts, tax determination, costing method, warehouse structure and approval hierarchy built to match how the business runs. Extension and integration is the second, and it is where most budgets actually go: connecting the ERP to shop-floor systems, warehouse management, EDI trading partners, a CRM, a payroll provider and the customs broker, then keeping those connections observable. Custom module development is the third, needed when the process has no packaged equivalent, which in this region means log scaling and grade reconciliation for forestry, catch and vessel tracking for marine, lot and batch traceability for food processors, or project-based revenue recognition for engineering firms. Migration off legacy is the fourth, usually from an aging on-premise system, a heavily customised older SAP or Dynamics installation, or the spreadsheet layer that grew around a system nobody trusts. Every engagement includes a tax determination design covering GST, PST, HST and QST, and a documented cutover and data reconciliation plan.

Industry Expertise

ERP Development for Vancouver's Key Industries

Forestry and wood products remain a core Vancouver ERP vertical, with log procurement, scaling and grade reconciliation, harvest billing to the province, mill yield tracking, and export documentation that has to survive softwood lumber duty and permit requirements on shipments into the United States. Marine and shipbuilding, anchored by Seaspan on the North Shore and the ferry and tug operators around the harbour, needs project-based costing, drydock scheduling and parts traceability. Food and beverage processing carries lot and batch traceability obligations under the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations, plus recall readiness that has to be demonstrable in minutes rather than days. Distribution and wholesale across the Lower Mainland lives on landed-cost accuracy, which means duty, brokerage, freight and exchange folded into item cost, and CARM-aware customs data flowing back into the ERP. Cleantech manufacturers including the fuel cell, marine electrification and carbon capture firms in Burnaby and Richmond need engineering change control and serialised component genealogy. Mining and resource companies headquartered downtown need multi-currency consolidation across foreign operating entities. Construction and engineering firms need percentage-of-completion revenue and holdback handling under Canadian practice.

Our Process

Our ERP Development Development Process

ERP failures are rarely technical and almost always about scope discipline and data readiness, so our process front-loads both. Discovery runs a current-state process map for order to cash, procure to pay, plan to produce and record to report, then produces a fit-gap register that names every process the packaged system does not handle and forces an explicit decision to change the process, configure around it, or build. Nothing is left as an assumption. In parallel we run a data readiness assessment on the master data that will actually move, meaning items, bills of material, customers, vendors, open orders and open balances, and we report the error rate before anyone commits to a go-live date. Tax determination is designed early with a written matrix covering BC PST self-assessment on out-of-province purchases, GST input tax credits, HST on Ontario and Atlantic sales, and QST where Quebec is in scope. Build sprints are two weeks with Thursday demos at 2:00 PM Pacific, always run against converted client data rather than demo records, because a configuration that looks correct on invented master data is the classic way an ERP passes review and fails go-live. Conversion loads and regression suites execute overnight in Chandigarh, so a full conversion cycle turns around between one working day and the next. We run at least two complete mock cutovers before the real one, each ending in a signed reconciliation of balances and record counts, and each one timed so finance knows in advance how many hours the real cutover weekend needs.

Technology

Technologies We Use for ERP Development

Platform choice follows the operating model, not the brochure. SAP S/4HANA fits multi-entity manufacturers and resource companies with real process manufacturing depth, and SAP's own Vancouver engineering presence means the local talent pool for it is deeper than most Canadian cities. Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain Management is the strongest fit where the client is already on Microsoft 365, Entra ID and Power BI, and it deploys into Azure Canada Central in Toronto with Canada East in Quebec City for failover. Oracle NetSuite suits distribution and multi-subsidiary consolidation. Acumatica and Odoo cover mid-market manufacturers where licence cost decides. Integration is built on an explicit middleware layer rather than point-to-point connections, using Azure Integration Services, MuleSoft or a self-managed pattern on Kafka and Kubernetes, deployed to AWS ca-west-1 in Calgary as the nearest Canadian region to Vancouver or ca-central-1 in Montreal. EDI with grocery, retail and industrial trading partners runs ANSI X12 and EDIFACT with 850 purchase orders, 856 advance ship notices and 810 invoices. Shop-floor and warehouse integration uses OPC UA, barcode and RFID scanning, and label printing through Zebra and BarTender.

Why Choose Us

Why Vancouver Businesses Choose Codazz for ERP Development

We combine world-class engineering with local market understanding to deliver erp development solutions that drive real business outcomes.

🧾

GST Plus PST, Done Properly

BC never harmonised, so 7 percent PST runs alongside 5 percent GST with different ledger treatment and a self-assessment obligation on goods brought into the province. We design the tax determination matrix across BC, Ontario HST, Quebec QST and Alberta before configuration starts, not during year-end reconciliation.

🚢

CARM and Landed Cost

Since October 21, 2024 CARM has been CBSA's official system of record for commercial import duties and taxes, moving financial security and accounting declarations onto importers. We build tariff, origin and valuation into the item master and reconcile landed cost against the CBSA statement of account.

🌲

Resource and Marine Depth

Log scaling and grade reconciliation for forestry, softwood export documentation, project costing and drydock scheduling for shipbuilding and marine, and serialised component genealogy for the Burnaby and Richmond cleantech manufacturers. These are custom modules, not configuration, and we scope them as such.

🔁

Two Mock Cutovers, Minimum

Migration runs as a repeated cycle, never a single event. Each mock conversion ends with a reconciliation of balances and record counts that the client signs before the next one starts, and the real cutover follows a written runbook with a rollback decision point and a named command structure.

Frequently Asked Questions About ERP Development in Vancouver

Ask a Question

More than most implementers expect, because British Columbia is not an HST province. BC charges a 7 percent Provincial Sales Tax that applies when taxable goods, software or services are acquired in BC or brought into BC for use here, and it operates alongside the 5 percent federal GST rather than being blended into it. Those two taxes behave differently in your general ledger. GST is a value-added tax where registrants recover input tax credits on business purchases. PST is a retail sales tax with no equivalent recovery mechanism, so PST paid on a business input is generally a cost that has to land in expense or in inventory value rather than in a recoverable tax account. That single distinction breaks a surprising number of chart-of-account designs copied from an Ontario or American template. Then there is self-assessment: goods purchased outside BC and brought in for use in BC can create a PST liability the vendor never charged, which the ERP has to detect and accrue rather than leaving to a spreadsheet at year end. Add Ontario HST at 13 percent, an Atlantic rate that stopped being uniform when Nova Scotia dropped from 15 to 14 percent on April 1, 2025 while New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island stayed at 15, Quebec GST plus QST, and Alberta GST only, and the tax determination matrix becomes a design deliverable in its own right rather than something the finance team reverse-engineers at quarter end.

The Canada Border Services Agency's CARM system became the official system of record for assessing and collecting duties and taxes on commercial imports on October 21, 2024, and it shifted responsibilities that importers had comfortably delegated to their customs broker for decades. Importers now register in the CARM Client Portal under their own business number, post their own financial security to keep Release Prior to Payment privileges rather than relying on the broker's bond, and are accountable for their own commercial accounting declarations and corrections. For an ERP that has three consequences. First, the customs data model has to be real: tariff classification, country of origin, valuation method and applicable trade agreement need to live on the item master rather than in a broker's system you cannot query. Second, landed cost has to reconcile against the actual CARM statement of account, which means the ERP needs to consume that data rather than accept whatever the broker invoices. Third, the accounting calendar changes, because duties and GST on imports now settle against a CBSA billing cycle the finance team has to reconcile monthly. For a port city where a large share of businesses import, this is not an edge case.

In Canadian dollars, with the caveat that ERP ranges are wider than any other category because scope varies by an order of magnitude. A mid-market implementation on NetSuite, Acumatica, Odoo or Business Central for a single-entity distributor or light manufacturer, covering finance, inventory, purchasing, sales, tax determination and two or three integrations, typically runs CAD 150,000 to 450,000 in services. A multi-entity or multi-site implementation on Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain or a mid-tier SAP footprint, with manufacturing execution, warehouse management, EDI, payroll integration and a real migration, typically runs CAD 450,000 to 1,500,000. A full SAP S/4HANA programme for a manufacturer or resource company with foreign subsidiaries runs well past that and is governed more by programme management than by engineering. Custom module work is quoted separately. Licences and cloud hosting are vendor costs on top. Two things reliably blow the number: master data that turns out to be worse than anyone admitted, and a fit-gap register that keeps growing after build starts. We price the data assessment separately and up front so both are visible early. All proposals are fixed fee against a signed statement of work.

A mid-market single-entity implementation typically runs nine to fourteen months from kickoff to a stable close after go-live. A multi-site or multi-entity programme runs eighteen to thirty months. The phases we work to are consistent. Discovery and fit-gap takes six to ten weeks and produces the process maps, the fit-gap register, the tax determination matrix and the data readiness report. Design and configuration takes twelve to twenty weeks and covers chart of accounts, costing method, warehouse and production structure, approval hierarchies and security roles. Integration and custom development runs in parallel and is usually the long pole. Data migration runs as a repeated cycle rather than a single event, with at least two full mock conversions, each reconciled and signed off. User acceptance testing takes six to ten weeks and must be run by the people who will actually use the system, not by a project team proxy, which is the most common cause of a rejected go-live. Cutover is a rehearsed weekend with a written runbook, a rollback decision point and a defined command structure. Hypercare runs four to eight weeks with daily triage before the system transitions to steady-state support.

Yes, and in most builds we integrate a specialist payroll engine rather than trying to compute Canadian payroll inside the ERP, because the compliance surface changes every year and a general-purpose ERP module is the wrong place to carry that risk. What the ERP does own is the cost side: labour distribution to jobs, work orders and cost centres, accruals, and the general ledger interface. The BC-specific items we design for are the Employer Health Tax, an annual tax on BC remuneration paid to employees that has applied since January 1, 2019 and needs accurate BC-only remuneration totals separated from remuneration paid in other provinces, and WorkSafeBC premiums, which are assessed by classification unit so the ERP has to carry the right classification against each labour category rather than applying one blanket rate. On top of that sit federal payroll obligations including source deductions, T4 reporting and Records of Employment, and the BC Employment Standards rules on overtime, statutory holiday pay and averaging agreements that drive how hours are captured on the shop floor. For unionised operations we build the collective agreement rules into time capture rather than leaving them to a supervisor's judgement.

We start from the opposite end of the question: which parts of an ERP programme actually fail when nobody is in the building. There are four, and we travel for all of them. Shop-floor process observation is first, because what an operator does at a station is never what the process document says, and you only catch the difference by standing there. Warehouse layout and scanning walkthroughs are second, since bin logic, pick paths and label placement are physical decisions that a video call flattens. User acceptance testing facilitation is third, and it is the phase most often faked by a project team clicking through scripts on behalf of the people who will actually use the system, which is the single most common cause of a rejected go-live. The cutover weekend is fourth. Everything else, meaning configuration, fit-gap sessions, integration development, conversion runs and steering governance, runs from Edmonton and Chandigarh without loss, and Codazz has no Vancouver office to pretend otherwise. Contracts are Canadian, invoicing is in Canadian dollars, and where residency is a requirement the system deploys into Canadian cloud regions, with ca-west-1 in Calgary the closest to Vancouver.
