ERP Development Solutions for Winnipeg Businesses

Winnipeg is a manufacturing and grain city, and both of those buy ERP for reasons a generic implementation partner underestimates. NFI Group, headquartered in Winnipeg, builds transit buses and motorcoaches across roughly fifty facilities in nine countries through New Flyer, Motor Coach Industries, Alexander Dennis, ARBOC, Plaxton, Carfair Composites and NFI Parts, which means the finance system is a multi-entity, multi-currency consolidation problem before it is a manufacturing problem. Boeing Winnipeg has run a composite manufacturing plant since 1971 and is the largest aerospace composite manufacturing centre in Canada, producing parts such as body-to-wing fairings, engine strut fairings and landing gear doors, where lot and serial traceability is a certification obligation rather than a nice report. StandardAero, founded in Winnipeg in 1911 as Standard Machine Works and now headquartered in Scottsdale, still runs a major engine MRO operation here alongside the GE Aerospace engine testing facility at the airport, and MRO planning breaks every assumption a discrete manufacturing ERP makes. Pollard Banknote prints secure instant lottery tickets from Winnipeg and additional North American plants for lottery and charitable gaming organisations across the continent, so serialised inventory and jurisdictional segregation drive the design. The Royal Canadian Mint's Winnipeg plant produces all of Canada's circulating coinage. On the grain side, Richardson International sits at One Lombard Place as a subsidiary of James Richardson and Sons, alongside Cargill Canada, Parrish and Heimbecker, Paterson and G3, all trading against grades and standards set by the Canadian Grain Commission at 303 Main Street under the Canada Grain Act. Codazz implements, extends and rebuilds ERP for these buyers: SAP S/4HANA, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations, Dynamics 365 Business Central, Oracle NetSuite, Epicor Kinetic and Odoo, plus custom modules in TypeScript or .NET where the package genuinely has no answer. Manitoba tax rules get wired in from the first design session, because a 7 percent Retail Sales Tax that is calculated before GST is applied, and a Health and Post Secondary Education Tax Levy on payroll above CAD 2.5 million, are not configuration afterthoughts. We work from Edmonton, one hour behind Winnipeg year-round, with a Chandigarh team covering the overnight build window. We do not have a Winnipeg office and will not claim one. Codazz has built software since 2018, delivered more than 500 projects and runs over 200 engineers. Call +1 (403) 604-8692.

What We Build

ERP Development Services We Offer in Winnipeg

Six ERP engagements repeat across Winnipeg. Greenfield implementations for manufacturers and distributors outgrowing QuickBooks, Sage 50 and a decade of Excel, where the hard part is costing method and inventory discipline rather than software. ERP replacement and re-implementation, usually because an earlier rollout shipped without traceability, without a working costing model or without the tax engine the business actually needs. Manufacturing extension work: shop floor data capture, first article inspection records, non-conformance and corrective action workflow, rotable and exchange pool tracking for MRO, and lot and serial genealogy that survives an audit. Grain and agri-commodity modules, covering scale ticket capture, grade and dockage, moisture shrink, storage and drying charges, deferred pricing contracts, basis and futures position reporting, and settlement against Canada Grain Act grading. Integration work joining ERP to MES, WMS, CAD and PLM, EDI trading partners, CARM for customs, and the bank. And cutover engineering, which we treat as its own discipline: data cleansing, dual-run periods, reconciliation reporting and a rollback plan, scheduled around harvest, shutdown or production peaks rather than around the vendor's fiscal quarter.

Industry Expertise

ERP Development for Winnipeg's Key Industries

Four Winnipeg clusters generate most ERP demand, and they need genuinely different systems. Aerospace and defence manufacturing, anchored by Boeing Winnipeg composites, Magellan Aerospace and StandardAero, needs AS9100 quality records, lot and serial genealogy that traces a finished assembly back to a resin batch and cure cycle, first article inspection, non-conformance workflow, and Controlled Goods Program awareness on data access. Bus and vehicle manufacturing, led by NFI Group and its subsidiaries, needs configure-to-order product structures, option-driven bills of material, multi-plant planning and consolidation across nine countries and several currencies. Grain handling and agri-processing, led by Richardson International, Cargill Canada, Parrish and Heimbecker, Paterson and G3, needs commodity accounting: grade and dockage, moisture shrink, storage and drying charges, deferred pricing, basis, and settlements that reconcile to Canadian Grain Commission standards. Secure and regulated print and manufacturing, including Pollard Banknote's secure instant ticket operations and the Royal Canadian Mint's coinage plant, needs serialised inventory, destruction and reconciliation records, and jurisdictional segregation. Building products and industrial manufacturers such as Price Industries add configure-to-order engineering and long lead-time procurement to the same mix.

Our Process

Our ERP Development Development Process

We run Central Time discovery so plant managers, controllers and the shop floor supervisor who actually knows how the current system is being worked around are in the same session. Phase one is a process and data audit rather than a demo: how a job is costed today, where inventory accuracy breaks, which spreadsheets act as the real system of record, and how many units of measure the same item carries between purchasing, production and shipping. Phase two is a tax and statutory design session covering Manitoba Retail Sales Tax at 7 percent calculated on the selling price before GST is applied, self-assessment on out-of-province purchases, GST and HST handling for customers in other provinces, and the Health and Post Secondary Education Tax Levy, which exempts total yearly payroll of CAD 2.5 million or less, charges 4.3 percent on the amount above that up to CAD 5 million, and 2.15 percent of total payroll above CAD 5 million. Phase three is a conference room pilot on real data, not demo data. Build and configuration sprints are two weeks with a controller sign-off gate on anything touching the general ledger. Cutover is rehearsed twice against production-scale volumes, with reconciliation reports the auditor can read, and scheduled deliberately outside harvest, inventory count and production peak windows.

Technology

Technologies We Use for ERP Development

Platform selection is driven by manufacturing mode, entity count and integration surface. SAP S/4HANA fits multi-entity manufacturers with genuine international consolidation, complex costing and existing SAP process discipline. Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations suits mid to large Winnipeg manufacturers on Microsoft tenants who want Power Platform extension and Entra ID identity without a second vendor relationship, while Business Central covers the smaller end of the same profile. Oracle NetSuite fits distribution-heavy and subscription-heavy businesses. Epicor Kinetic is a serious contender for discrete and mixed-mode manufacturers who want deeper shop floor capability out of the box. Odoo earns a place when the buyer needs broad functional coverage on a modest budget and accepts more custom work. Around the package we build extensions in X++ and .NET for Dynamics, ABAP and CAP for SAP, SuiteScript for NetSuite, and Python or TypeScript services for anything that should live outside the ERP. Integration runs on Azure Logic Apps or Service Bus, MuleSoft where the client already owns it, ANSI X12 EDI for 850, 856 and 810 traffic with American customers, and OPC UA or MQTT for machine data. Hosting is Azure Canada Central in Toronto or AWS ca-west-1 in Calgary, the closest Canadian AWS region to Winnipeg.

Why Choose Us

Why Winnipeg Businesses Choose Codazz for ERP Development

We combine world-class engineering with local market understanding to deliver erp development solutions that drive real business outcomes.

🧾

Manitoba Tax Engineered In

Manitoba charges 7 percent Retail Sales Tax calculated before GST, has no HST, and requires self-assessment on out-of-province purchases. We design the sales-side rate matrix, the accounts payable use-tax accrual and the Health and Post Secondary Education Tax Levy accrual during the conference room pilot, not during go-live week.

🌾

Grain Accounting, Not Guesswork

Scale tickets, Canadian Grain Commission grades, dockage, moisture shrink, drying and storage charges, basis and deferred pricing contracts do not fit a manufacturing bill of materials. We build a commodity module beside the ERP that shares master data and posts settled results to the general ledger, in tonnes and bushels at once.

🛩️

Aerospace Traceability Depth

Boeing Winnipeg composites, Magellan and StandardAero MRO need genealogy in both directions, enforced shelf life and out-time on composite material at issue, linked first article and non-conformance records, and Controlled Goods-aware access on drawings. We enforce these at transaction time rather than reporting them afterwards.

📅

Cutover Around Your Calendar

We schedule go-live outside harvest, inventory count and production peaks, rehearse the cutover twice at production data volumes, publish reconciliation reports the controller and the auditor can both read, keep the old system readable through a dual period, and hold a documented rollback plan through hypercare.

📍

Local Expertise

Ask a Question

Ranges rather than a number, because scope and data quality drive most of the variance. A Business Central or Odoo implementation for a single-entity Winnipeg manufacturer or distributor, with finance, inventory, purchasing, sales and one production module, migrated from an accounting package and two spreadsheets, typically runs CAD 120,000 to 300,000 over four to eight months. A mid-market Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations, NetSuite or Epicor Kinetic rollout with multiple sites, shop floor capture, a real costing model, three to six integrations and EDI, typically runs CAD 400,000 to 1.2 million. A multi-entity SAP S/4HANA programme with international consolidation, several currencies and manufacturing depth starts around CAD 1.5 million and scales from there. Software licences and cloud subscriptions sit on top and go to the vendor. Custom grain or MRO modules built alongside the package usually add CAD 150,000 to 500,000. Winnipeg senior engineering rates run below Toronto and Vancouver and modestly below Calgary, and dramatically below New York or Chicago equivalents. We quote fixed fee per phase against a signed statement of work rather than open-ended time and materials, and we price the cutover separately because that is where budgets usually break.

More than most implementers expect, because Manitoba did not harmonise. The province charges a Retail Sales Tax at a general rate of 7 percent, and Manitoba Finance is explicit that RST is calculated on the selling price before GST is applied, so the ERP has to sequence two separate taxes rather than apply one blended rate. That immediately rules out a single-rate tax configuration for any Winnipeg business selling beyond the province, because the same order line may need Manitoba RST plus 5 percent GST, HST in Ontario and the Atlantic provinces, GST plus a separate provincial sales tax in British Columbia and Saskatchewan, and GST plus QST in Quebec. Purchasing is the half most projects miss: Manitoba requires self-assessment of RST on taxable goods and services brought into the province from out-of-province suppliers who did not collect it, so the accounts payable side needs a use-tax accrual, not just a sales-side rate table. On the payroll side the Health and Post Secondary Education Tax Levy has to accrue as an employer expense, with the exemption shared across an associated corporate group. We design and test these rules in a conference room pilot before go-live.

Most standard ERPs cannot do it unaided, and pretending otherwise is how these projects fail. Grain is not a discrete unit with a fixed cost. A load arrives on a scale ticket with a gross, tare and net weight, a grade assigned against Canadian Grain Commission standards under the Canada Grain Act, a moisture reading, a dockage percentage and possibly a protein test. From there the settlement has to apply shrink for moisture, deduct dockage, apply drying and storage charges, apply the basis against a futures reference, and honour whatever pricing contract the producer chose, which may be a deferred delivery, a basis contract or a deferred pricing arrangement that will not settle for months. Inventory has to be tracked in tonnes and bushels at once, with commingled bin positions rather than lot-per-unit tracking. We build this as a commodity module beside the ERP, sharing master data and posting settled results into the general ledger, rather than torturing a manufacturing bill of materials into a shape it was never designed for. The ERP keeps finance, procurement and fixed assets; the commodity module keeps grade, position and settlement.

For Boeing Winnipeg-class composite work, Magellan and the Manitoba aerospace supply chain, traceability is a certification obligation, so the ERP has to carry it in the transaction record and not in an attached document. That means genealogy in both directions: from a shipped assembly back through every subassembly, every lot of prepreg or resin, the cure cycle it ran, the tooling used, the operator and the inspection results, and forward from any suspect raw material lot to every unit it touched, so a containment action can be scoped in minutes rather than days. Shelf life and out-time on composite materials have to be enforced at issue, not reported afterwards, because expired material used in a lay-up is a scrapped part. First article inspection records, non-conformance reports and corrective action workflow have to be linked to the same part and job records. Certificates of conformance and material test reports need to be retrievable per shipment. Access control matters too, because Controlled Goods Program obligations and customer contract terms restrict who may see certain drawings and specifications. We configure or extend the package to enforce these at transaction time rather than as reporting.

NFI Group-style structures, with multiple legal entities across nine countries, several currencies and intercompany material flow, are a design problem before they are a configuration problem. We start by fixing the chart of accounts and the entity hierarchy, because a consolidation built on inconsistent account structures never reconciles. Then we design intercompany trading rules, transfer pricing treatment, elimination entries and functional versus reporting currency handling, including the translation method and where revaluation gains and losses land. Reporting currency and consolidation happen in the ERP where the package supports it, and in a warehouse layer where it does not. On customs, Canadian importers now transact through the CBSA Assessment and Revenue Management system, and the transition period for posting financial security under the Release Prior to Payment programme closed on 20 May 2025. Each importer of record needs its own security in place, sized at 50 percent of its highest monthly duties and GST over the prior year with a minimum of CAD 5,000. We integrate the ERP with the customs broker feed so entries, duties and GST post automatically and landed cost is real rather than estimated.

A single-entity Business Central or Odoo implementation typically runs four to eight months from kickoff to go-live. A mid-market Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations, NetSuite or Epicor Kinetic programme runs nine to eighteen months. A multi-entity S/4HANA programme runs eighteen months and up, usually phased by entity or by region rather than attempted in one event. Timing matters more in Winnipeg than in most markets. Grain and agri-processing clients should not cut over between late July and November, when harvest volume peaks and the elevator has no slack for a data problem. Manufacturers usually cut over during a scheduled shutdown or the quietest month in their production calendar. Anything touching payroll is easiest at a calendar year boundary, because year-to-date balances and the Health and Post Secondary Education Tax Levy accrual carry cleanly. We rehearse the cutover twice against production-scale data, publish reconciliation reports the controller and auditor can both read, keep a documented rollback plan, and run a dual-period where the old system stays readable. Hypercare runs thirty to sixty days with named engineers on Central Time.
