Our Process

Our AR & VR Development Development Process

We run discovery, design, build, and deployment on KST hours so Seoul product owners at Samsung, LG, HYBE, Naver, Kakao, and Krafton get synchronous standups during their working day, with Edmonton overlap for North American counterparts. Discovery opens with a hardware target matrix (Samsung Galaxy XR, Apple Vision Pro, Meta Quest 3 and 3S, Pico 4 Ultra which has strong distribution in Korea through ByteDance partnerships, mobile AR via ARKit and ARCore, WebXR fallback), a Korean platform-economics review (Galaxy Store revenue share, One Store as the Korean Android alternative, Korean App Store pricing in KRW, telco bundle distribution through LG U+ and SK Telecom), a PIPA data inventory that treats eye tracking, hand tracking, and biometric facial features as sensitive personal information, an AI Framework Act risk classification when generative AI is embedded (voice cloning for K-pop idol avatars, AI-generated webtoon panels, AI-driven NPCs in XR games), and a KCSC content rating workflow for any experience targeting public distribution in Korea. Build sprints are two weeks, reviewed against device-specific frame rate budgets (90Hz Samsung Galaxy XR and Vision Pro, 90 or 120Hz Quest 3, 72Hz with Application SpaceWarp for headroom-constrained scenes). Deployment includes Korean Real-Name Verification integration through KISA-approved identity providers (NICE, KCB, SCI) for social or transactional features, KCSC content rating submission, and telco channel bundling discussions with LG U+ and SK Telecom where 5G-distributed XR makes sense.

Technologies We Use for AR & VR Development

Korean AR and VR workloads run on a Samsung-and-Apple bifurcated platform stack with Meta as a secondary surface. Samsung Galaxy XR development uses the Android XR Jetpack libraries, Unity AR Foundation with the Android XR provider, Unreal Engine 5 with Samsung\'s reference development kit, and Samsung\'s One UI XR design language for native UI fidelity. Apple Vision Pro development uses Xcode, SwiftUI, RealityKit, and Reality Composer Pro, with Korean localisation including Hangul typography, Korean date and time formats, and Korean Won currency. Meta Quest development uses the Meta XR SDK and Presence Platform with Korean App Lab distribution. K-pop XR concerts run on Unreal Engine 5 with nDisplay and Disguise media servers for LED volume integration, syncing with HYBE\'s Weverse Live or SM Entertainment\'s Beyond Live broadcast infrastructure. Webtoon AR uses Unity AR Foundation with panel-segmentation pipelines tuned for vertical-scroll comic layouts. Backend services run AWS ap-northeast-2 (Seoul) by default for low-latency Korean users and PIPA data residency, with Naver Cloud Platform as the Korean-sovereign alternative when government or financial clients require domestic-only hosting, CloudFront and Naver CDN for spatial asset delivery, and Korean analytics through Amplitude or AB180 Airbridge for Korea-specific attribution patterns.

Frequently Asked Questions About AR & VR Development in Seoul

Ask a Question

Budget tracks the build, and the build is usually one of three: a scoped Samsung Galaxy XR proof of concept, a production Apple Vision Pro or Samsung Galaxy XR app, or a K-pop VR concert production for a HYBE or SM-tier idol group. Scope drivers include Android XR native development and Galaxy Store submission preparation. Seoul XR rates sit slightly below Tokyo and the Bay Area but above the Southeast Asia market, reflecting the dense Korean talent pool around Samsung, LG, Naver, Kakao, Krafton, NCSoft, and the K-pop XR studios. We bill in KRW or USD on KST hours with fixed-fee proposals against a signed scope.

The AI Framework Act, passed by the Korean National Assembly in December 2024 and effective in 2025, requires AI systems classified as high-impact (employment, healthcare, public services, biometrics, critical infrastructure, and large generative AI models) to follow risk management, transparency, and human oversight requirements, with the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) and the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) as primary regulators. XR experiences embedding generative AI hit this directly: voice-cloned K-pop idol avatars, AI-generated webtoon panels, AI-driven NPCs in XR games, and AI-assisted virtual fan meets all require risk classification, disclosure, and a documented human oversight workflow. Our discovery phase runs an AI Framework Act classification on the use case and produces a model card, a transparency disclosure suitable for KCSC review, and a PIPA-aligned data flow for any biometric or behavioural data captured. The Korean regulator template is closer to the EU AI Act than to the US sectoral approach, so multinational deployments often share documentation across both jurisdictions.

Yes. The Samsung Galaxy XR headset is being developed by Samsung Electronics in partnership with Google (which contributes the Android XR operating system) and Qualcomm (which contributes the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 reference platform), with commercial launch in late 2025 as the Korean-led alternative to Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest. We build native Galaxy XR apps using the Android XR Jetpack libraries (which provide the Android-native UI and interaction surface for XR), Unity AR Foundation with the Android XR provider for cross-platform Unity teams, and Unreal Engine 5 with Samsung\'s reference development kit for visually demanding titles. Distribution runs through the Galaxy Store XR section as the primary surface, with Google Play XR as the secondary channel and One Store available as the Korean-sovereign Android alternative. Performance budgets target 90Hz refresh with Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 GPU constraints. Samsung\'s developer relations team is in Suwon thirty kilometres south of central Seoul, which keeps our coordination loop tight on platform questions.

K-pop XR runs on Unreal Engine 5 with nDisplay and Disguise media servers for LED volume integration, synced with HYBE\'s Weverse Live or SM Entertainment\'s Beyond Live broadcast infrastructure for hybrid in-person plus VR shows. Virtual idol avatars (the aespa Naevis IP from SM Entertainment is the reference case, with HYBE and YG exploring similar virtual member concepts) combine Unreal MetaHuman or Live2D facial rigs with motion capture from Xsens or Vicon, voice processing through licensed K-pop label vocal stems, and AI-assisted choreography preview. We coordinate with the agency\'s in-house XR team, the broadcast partner, and the VR distribution platform (Weverse, Beyond Live, V-Live successor surfaces, third-party VR concert platforms like Wave and Roblox stage activations), and ship the underlying spatial audio, multi-user co-presence, and fan interaction layers (light stick sync, fan chant audio mixing, virtual gift economies). For virtual idols specifically, AI Framework Act disclosure applies to voice-cloned vocal performances, and Korean Real-Name Verification ties to fan accounts for transactional features.

Korea\'s Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) classifies biometric identifiers (fingerprints, facial geometry, voice prints, iris scans) and biometric processing data as sensitive personal information requiring separate explicit consent, restricted purposes, and a documented retention schedule with destruction at the end of the stated purpose. XR-specific biometric surfaces include Vision Pro Persona scans, Quest 3 hand and eye tracking, Galaxy XR face authentication, and webtoon AR facial tracking for reader expression analytics. The Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) enforces PIPA with administrative fines up to three percent of total revenue for serious violations, and the 2023 PIPA amendments tightened cross-border transfer rules requiring explicit consent or PIPC approval. Our discovery phase produces a PIPA data inventory, a sensitive personal information flow diagram with consent text in Korean, a retention schedule typically of one year for behavioural data and three years for identity data, and a Korean-language privacy policy that satisfies PIPC template guidance. For cross-border transfer to AWS regions outside Korea or to US-headquartered platform vendors, we document the legal basis (consent, contract performance, or adequacy decision).

Korea has historically required Real-Name Verification (실명 인증) for online accounts with social or transactional features, implemented through KISA-approved identity providers (NICE, KCB, SCI) that tie an account to a Korean resident registration number or mobile phone number. The 2012 Constitutional Court decision struck down the broad real-name requirement for general internet use, but sector-specific requirements remain for online gaming (under the Game Industry Promotion Act), financial services, payment processing, and content age-gating. XR experiences with social features (multiplayer VR rooms, social VR avatars, fan-meet ticketing), gaming features (XR games subject to KCSC rating and the Game Industry Promotion Act), or transactional features (in-app purchases, virtual gift economies in K-pop XR concerts) typically integrate Real-Name Verification through NICE or KCB at account creation. We build this as a pluggable identity layer that satisfies Korean requirements without compromising the UX for international users on the same XR title.

LG Display in Yeouido and Paju supplies the micro-OLED panels that drive Apple Vision Pro and the next generation of premium VR headsets including the Samsung Galaxy XR, with Samsung Display supplying competing micro-OLED technology and pursuing the same supply chain. This is relevant to XR builds in two ways. First, LG Display\'s panel specifications inform performance budgets: Vision Pro\'s 23 million pixels at 90Hz with foveated rendering and the Galaxy XR\'s comparable spec set both originate from Korean panel engineering, so the rendering targets are set by the underlying hardware capabilities. Second, Korean industrial XR clients (LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Mobis) often build XR training and quality control workflows that touch the same display manufacturing lines, with HoloLens 2 and Samsung XR enterprise devices deployed inside cleanroom and assembly contexts. We coordinate with the client\'s display engineering team on color management, gamma calibration, and PWM dimming considerations that matter for industrial visual inspection scenarios in particular.

The Korea Communications Standards Commission (KCSC) and the Game Rating and Administration Committee (GRAC) rate content for public distribution in Korea, with mandatory rating before commercial release for games (under the Game Industry Promotion Act) and content-based labelling for other media. XR titles classified as games (the GRAC definition is broad: interactive entertainment with goal-based gameplay) require GRAC submission with build artefacts, documentation, and a typically four-to-eight-week review window before Galaxy Store, Google Play, or App Store Korea distribution. KCSC additionally reviews user-generated content surfaces (social VR rooms where users can create or modify content, K-pop XR fan meet chat) for compliance with Korean content standards including age-appropriate categorisation, restrictions on simulated gambling within virtual economies, and limits on graphic content. Our deployment workflow includes GRAC and KCSC submission package preparation, age-rating recommendation, and a self-regulatory plan for user-generated content moderation that satisfies KCSC expectations and avoids post-launch takedown orders.
